Business Life Lessons Learned From the Movies

"Business Life Lessons Learned From the Movies"
Following essay was posted to monthly magazine "Staff Adviser " home page.

Business Life Lessons Learned From the Movies
Movies featuring business situations are enjoyable:
I may be someone who watches a large number of movies compared to other people of my generation.
I count the number of movies I watch in the theater in a year. Last year, it was 43. Two years ago, it was 47.
I like action and romance films.
I also like movies featuring business enterprises.
It is a very useful reference for me in my work to watch scenes from movies representing the way business negotiations are carried out, the way meetings are held and conversations between those in senior positions and their subordinates.

Movies featuring business enterprises provide me with fresh material from which I can learn about American society.
Movies that particularly impressed me were: “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” “The Informant!” and “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

 Movies featuring corporate downsizing:
I watched a movie on DVD this New Year’s holiday.
It was “Up in the Air”, which was released two years ago.
The movie deals with corporate downsizing.
A handsome George Clooney acts as someone who fires people on behalf of other companies.
He is contracted by companies to travel all over the United States by airplane and tell a person that he or she no longer has a job.
His goal is to reach ten million frequent flyer miles.

Dismissing employees is originally the job of the employee’s boss or the personnel manager.
But they outsource this nasty and unpleasant job to outside the company.
Aggressively taking full advantage of outsourcing is a typical element of American management.

The employee who has been told they no longer have a job trembles with anger.
Even though they want to explode in anger, they can't release their frustrations because the person in front of them is just a contracted employee.

Outsourcing downsizing tasks to outside the company is a great convenience for the boss of employees to be dismissed and personnel managers because they can dismiss someone without getting their hands dirty.

Dismissing someone and being dismissed:
Dismissing someone when a company is downsizing causes great pain to those being dismissed. At the same time, the act of dismissing someone is also usually a very difficult thing to do.

15 years ago, I was suddenly dismissed.
Moreover, on the following day, I switched roles and found myself having to dismiss other employees.
At that time, the dot-com bubble had almost completely collapsed.
I was the head of a venture company (R Corporation), which had its head office in Silicon Valley in the U.S.
The business in Japan began well by successfully securing a sales alliance contract with a major advertisement agency (D Corporation)

Without any advanced notice, the VP from the U.S. HQ showed up at the Tokyo office.
He told me that:
"Our company will be liquidated by the end of next month. Because the planned capital increase fell through the company’s cash reserves have almost run out. Consequently, the business cannot continue in this state."

“The U.S. HQ will be liquidated” meant that the Tokyo office would be shut down. That is to say, I myself was to be dismissed. This sudden news upset me very much.

The liquidation of the Tokyo office didn’t just mean my dismissal, but also the dismissal of the 26 employees in the Tokyo office.

One of my roles as the head of the Tokyo office was to tell the employees that our office is being closed and that all of you will be fired by the end of the next month.”

I immediately met with an attorney and discussed how I should proceed.

Both employees and I went through a very hard and bitter experience.
However the liquidation process was somehow completed by the given period.
Even now I can’t forget this painful incident.

Movies are packed full of life:
In the movie “Up in the Air”, there is a scene where George Clooney makes a speech in front of an audience of people who were fired. He asks the audience: “What’s In Your Backpack?”
By comparing life to a backpack, he asks “what are you packing into your backpack?” in his speech.
The title of this movie, “Up in the Air,” refers to an idiom that means “not yet decided” or “no idea at all.”

The movie provides us with the opportunity to reflect on our own lives. The movie includes a cast featuring various people that act out many different lives.
We are now living in chaotic times, searching for the direction we should be headed
Someday, we may discover this direction through the people or the events that appear in the movies.
I am going to continue to watch movies as before with an inquisitive mind, always looking to learn new things.

http://www.staffad.com/bilingual/shinbori/shinbori05_ja.html

Whats In Your Backpack? 映画の原題は「up in the air」。

Leadership in a SNS (Social Network Service) society

Following essay was posted to monthly magazine "Staff Adviser " home page.
http://www.staffad.com/bilingual/shinbori/shinbori04_en.html

Leadership in a SNS (Social Network Service) society

●Social impact brought about by SNS
It was said that the Jasmine revolution in Tunisia and the Civil Revolution in Egypt which recently took place were triggered by social media services such as Facebook and Twitter.
Appeals were made to people to rise up through SNS services.
The dictator in power of these countries lost the ability to govern their own country, and consequently the dismantling of dictatorial control began.

The way people communicate is now changing with the introduction of SNS.
The way human relationships are maintained and the way of working are also changing.
The way of management and leadership in the corporate world also seems to be changing as a result of SNS.

Ms A, an acquaintance of mine in her mid thirties, works at a financial company. She is now developing a love simulation game application for the iPhone.
She has not been satisfied with existing games in this genre.
This is why she started to create a story in line with her own interests.
She recruited colleagues who are in charge of designing, developing and marketing the software through Facebook.
Other members of the team, people who saw potential in her idea and business plan, joined her team and organized the development project.
Each member of this project has other full time work commitments.

Ms A, as the project leader, is in charge of overall project management such as creation of business plans and development schedules.
Regular meetings are conducted using Skype.
Even late into the night, everyone can get together on the same network and have a meeting, interacting with one another face-to-face.
Once the app is complete, the product will be sold on the global market as well as on the domestic market.
If the product becomes a hit, earning a profit of hundreds of millions of yen may not be a dream.

●SNS. The secret behind Obama's victory in the U.S. presidential election
SNS has now started to bear great influences on the business scene as well as in people's social lives, as SNS is becoming more than social matching tool to be used for simply finding friends on a network.
The power of its influence is increasing in Japan.
The potential of SNS was quickly recognized in the U.S., where the first wave of its popularity swept three years ago.
It was the Obama presidential election campaign.
President Obama widely established grassroots support organizations during his president election campaign.
He succeeded in gaining a large amount of his election funds, an amount surpassing 3 billion yen, by collecting a large number of small donations.
This success was largely owed to an SNS which was setup called Mybo (my.barackobama.com)

●Leader of the SNS society, "Chris Hughes"
The person who created this website was a young man who was 23 years old at the time. His name was Chris Hughes.
He was one of founders of Facebook when he was a student at Harvard University.
He broke away from his associates who quit the university and moved to Silicon Valley.
After graduating from university he joined Barrack Obama's presidential campaign team.

It cannot be denied that new media like this was in the background of his overwhelming victory.
People could easily join his election campaign site through the Internet.
Consequently, supporters who were spread out nationwide could be individually organized on the Internet, and the combined power behind this movement is what led to Obama becoming president.
He is now operating an SNS called Jumo.
Jumo is the network which connects ordinary people with NPOs & Charity Organizations working to make social contributions.
People can donate money to the charity of their choice through this site.
Chris Hughes is a new type of leader who has helped push forward the SNS revolution.

●Common ground between Chris Hughes and George Bush
When I think about a president who exemplifies the typical type of leadership seen in the U.S., I can name George H. W. Bush (Big Bush), 41st president, and his son George W. Bush (Little Bush), 43rd president.
Both had their leadership put to the test as president: in case of Big Bush, the Gulf War in Iraq and in case of Small Bush, the 9/11 terror attacks.
Whether or not the decision to attack Iraq and Afghanistan was right, it can be said that both presidents received an extremely high approval rating.
There is common ground between the two Bushes and Chris Hughes.
Both of them spent their high school years at a boarding school called Phillips Academy, Andover, which is located in the suburbs outside Boston.

Of the approximately 300 boarding schools in the U.S. Phillips Academy, Andover is one of the oldest and most prestigious.
I had the opportunity to visit this school 30 years ago.
The brick walls of the school buildings and the extensive campus conveyed a level of grandeur that made it seem like something out of a movie.
One of features of the boarding school is the way it helps build character in students.
They put special emphasis on the creation of leadership qualities in people.

●Communication leadership which is required for a new era
The Bushes represent a top down type of leader.
On the other hand, Chris Hughes is a horizontal type of leader in this SNS society.
It is interesting how a young man, who in the eyes of many could be like "a beloved child," shows a different form of leadership from George W. Bush who graduated from the same traditional boarding school just one generation beforehand.

The essence of leadership is not to make others follow, whether the type of leadership is similar to a pyramid type structure found with people involved in the affairs of the state or a horizontally structured organization such as that often found in networks connecting people.
The foundation of leadership is the leader's ability to communicate with others.

With this in mind, can we say that there is proper education on leadership in Japan?
In the U.S., there are a extracurricular activities which make students think for themselves about topics such as "what is a leader?"
Simultaneously, there is a tradition for teaching and training the attitude, readiness and techniques to ready students for leadership.
Even ordinary people who are not in leadership positions are educated to attain the consciousness required to be an active participant when electing leaders and supporting the activities of leaders.

From such a point of view, I think Japan needs to further concentrate efforts in leadership education.
I hope that everyone from young children to college students get an education in the importance and necessity of the communication, and practical opportunities to exercise this learning.
Education in early childhood is vital in order to create the kind of leader who will support Japan in the future.
How we grow community leaders that are respected by the people is also an issue for us adults.

SNS(ソーシャル・ネットワーク・サービス)社会でのリーダーシップとは

http://www.staffad.com/bilingual/shinbori/shinbori04_ja.html

『SNS(ソーシャル・ネットワーク・サービス)社会でのリーダーシップとは』

What we can do to improve leadership in Japan

Following essay was posted to monthly magazine "Staff Adviser " home page.
http://www.staffad.com/bilingual/shinbori/shinbori03_en.html
What we can do to improve leadership in Japan
●The type of leadership we can see in Nadeshiko Japan:One of most moving things I have seen this year was the first victory of the Japanese women's national soccer team at the 2011 Women's World Cup. When the team paid a courtesy call to the Japanese prime minister, Mr. Naoto Kan, at his place of residency, he praised the leadership of team captain, Ms. Homare Sawa, and told her as follows:
"You have organized and managed your team very well. I'm not sure if I'll make it in time, but I'd like to start learning from the leadership you displayed." This speech is still fresh in our minds.
The absence of leadership is not new in Japanese political circles. It seems that the seriousness of this matter stands out even more clearly amidst the current crises Japan is facing. As a result, Japan's government bond rating dropped below that of Spain and Italy, recording the lowest rating among the developed nations. Japan's presence at the G7 summit is also weakening. On the other hand, the people in charge of countries such as the U.S., Russia, China, the UK and France have been elected as representatives who possess a certain level of leadership.

●The difference between leadership and management:In the U.S, studies on leadership have always been popular. The September issue of the "Diamond Harvard Business Review" has a feature on "Great leadership." One of the articles by Professor John P. Kotter focuses on "The difference between leadership and management."

According to the article, management refers to the creation of an environment and systems that enable "ordinary people to execute ordinary tasks at a higher level of performance than normal." That is, Kotter speaks of management as "Organization Building," "Resource Allocation," "Control" and "Problem Solving."

On the other hand, leadership refers to moving an organization by working on individual members and its culture. That is, Kotter speaks of leadership as “Change," "Direction," "Motivation" and "Uniting people."

●Leadership is not required in bottom up management: In Japan, there is a tendency to think that leadership and management are one and the same. It might be that the concept of leadership had not existed because of the adoption of a bottom up management style.
Japan has traditionally been operated by a bureaucratic management and economic circle, and even without a strong leader presence, Japan has functioned well as the country by finding some form of solution to any problem that cropped up.

However, this is set to change in the future. Today the country faces many problems such as a "low birthrate and an aging society," "radioactive contamination" and "energy concerns."

We cannot simply get away with resolving problems as they crop up. We require strong leadership in order to carry out reform in Japan.

●Leadership as exemplified by Apple:In July in the U.S, Apple's market value exceeded that of ExxonMobil, the largest energy company in the world, to become the world's leading company in terms of market value.

I often used to visit Cupertino in Silicon Valley, where Apple is located. At that time, I was in charge of a Sony 3.5" micro floppy disc-related project. Apple was the first PC company to adopt the micro floppy. With this as a starting point, the micro floppy disk drive became a world standard.

At that time, Apple's president was Steve Jobs. Later on, Apple was to experience a slump, and he was banished from Apple at one time. Apple was nearly bankrupt. But 15 years ago he helped Apple turn things around. It was largely due to his overwhelming leadership and aesthetic sensibilities that Apple managed to recover and eventually become the No.1 company in the world.

●The way of Job's leadership:Steve Jobs gave a commencement address at Stanford University in July 2005 following his return from his first medical treatment. The speech included the following piece of advice.
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.
.... Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. "

There may be a limit to the amount of time given to a country such as Japan. If everyone were to follow their heart and intuition ,a strong new leader would surely be born. Let's hope for the arrival of a Japanese Steve Jobs.

http://www.staffad.com/bilingual/shinbori/shinbori03_ja.html

Eat alone if you aim to succeed abroad

Eat alone if you aim to succeed abroad

●Advice received from Mr. Akio Morita, founder of Sony

"If you go abroad, you should become someone who can eat alone in a restaurant".
This was a piece of advice I received from one Mr. Akio Morita, the founder of Sony.
If someone were to ask me “Who do you respect?” Mr. Morita would be a name I would reply back with without hesitation.

Mr. Morita was a really global-minded person who was active on the world stage while also maintaining a wide network of acquaintances in the business & political world.
Mr. Morita was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century as someone actively influential in the world economy.

I had several opportunities to meet and talk directly to Mr. Morita while I was a Sony employee. On one occasion, I met with him just before I was transferred to Sony’s U.S. Office.

At the time, I was 30-year-old employee with no title. Mr. Morita, the chairman of Sony, gave me the following advice.
“When going to U.S., make sure you go to a restaurant alone, and enjoy a meal by yourself.”

I think the usual advice given to young Japanese employees about to be transferred to the U.S. is, “Study English and work hard.” Honestly speaking, I was a little bit embarrassed to hear such advice as “Enjoy your meal when at a restaurant.”

●Eating a meal alone is not such an easy task

What exactly did Mr. Morita’s advice, “Go to a restaurant alone and enjoy a meal by yourself” mean?
・ Appropriate dress is required when you go to a first-class restaurant
・ A reservation needs to be made beforehand
・ You may need to ask about the day’s special to the waiter at the dining table.
・ You will need to take in information on what wine is suitable for the meal
・ Of course, you need to understand the description of dishes outlined in the menu
・ If you have difficulty understanding the menu, you will need to ask the waiter for help
・ You order the dish you would like to eat
・ Once you have finished eating, you may praise the chef on a finely cooked meal or give some comments.
・ Sometimes you may need to engage in small-talk with the waiter
・ After you finish paying for your meal you will need to give the waiter a tip to show gratitude

The whole experience is quite a challenge. It is quite different from a meal at a fast food restaurant such as McDonalds, Subway or Domino’s Pizza.

●Common aspects in global business

When you take a moment to consider Mr. Morita’s advice you realize that it contains many of the basic elements you need to consider when carrying out business on a global scale.
That is,
・ The ability to communicate in English
・ The sociability to be able to maintain a dialog with anyone
・ A considerate mind
・ The ability to converse on subjects other than work
・ An understanding of the food culture and manners of the country you’re visiting

Ultimately, it is the building of a satisfactory relationship between the party supplying the food and the party receiving it. That is:
・ The ability to build a win-win relationship

A true global businessperson is one who can form win-win relationships in the global business scene. Mr. Morita must have hoped to mould his employees into people who could excel globally.

Many years have passed since I received this piece of advice from Mr. Morita. However, I still haven’t reached the level of ‘going to a restaurant alone, and enjoying a meal by myself.’ It requires a certain amount of bravery to dine at a first class restaurant alone when abroad. Sometimes I am not taken to a good table seat and am not treated well.
If I am the kind of person who projects a highly refined ambiance, the waiter may give me a warmer reception.

However to my regret, it is hard for me, with my humble appearance, to pull this off.
Frankly speaking, if I get the chance to go to a first-class restaurant, I hope it is with a graceful lady.
Thinking this way is what probably prevents from being the global businessman that Mr. Morita was...

http://www.staffad.com/bilingual/shinbori/shinbori02_ja.html

An Unexpected Side to the American Businessperson -- Businesslike and self-assertion are myths. Switching between one's real intentions and their publ

An Unexpected Side to the American Businessperson
-- Businesslike and self-assertion are myths. Switching between one's real intentions and their public face --

●Prejudice against American businesspeople by Japanese people
What are the differences between American businesspeople and Japanese businesspeople? I asked my friends this question and this is how they replied.
1) The American businessperson is businesslike. They clearly distinguish between business and their personal lives.
2) The American businessperson is self-assertive. They are always pushing their opinion.
3) The American businessperson doesn’t switch between their real intentions and their public face.

Most Japanese seem to have this kind of prejudice. However you can tell that it is a stereotypical viewpoint when working with executive level American businesspeople. They are not always businesslike. They actively listen to others. The switching between one’s real intentions and the face one puts on in public is not unique to the Japanese people. American businesspeople also switch between the two sometimes.

●Building communication using one’s own private time
About 20 years ago, I was in charge of PC multimedia projects. I often visited PC hardware and software vendors in the U.S. for the purpose of establishing world standards for multimedia formats. Each vendor had their own intentions, and aspired to include their own technology and patents into the standards.

They had a high motivation and eagerness for their work and didn’t compromise easily. However I encountered something unexpected. After a meeting with U.S. vendors during the day, I left saying, “Well, let’s pick up where we left off tomorrow...” At this point I was often invited “Let’s have a drink together,” or “I would like to invite you for dinner at my house.”

When the meeting would be held after the weekend, I was invited to go golfing or to go on a cruise over the weekend.

They spend their important private time over the weekend or at night for their business clients or partners. Nevertheless, they don’t discuss work at night or on the weekend.

What I learned was: one of most important factors which they use to succeed in business is the human relationship. Building a good human relationship leads to greater business success, they think.

Therefore they are always thinking about how they can build better communication by using not only their time at work but also their private time. They are always thinking of ways to improve communication with fellow employees within the company and their division, as well as with people outside the company.

In the case of company executives, the boundary between one’s business and private lives starts to break down. The person who sits next to you on the plane may be the same person who conducts an M&A business meeting with you the next day. The human relationships which higher ranked executives have are not solely businesslike, but rather mix of one’s private and public face in a good way.

●Mr. Bill Gates is good at praising
It is a common saying that American businesspeople are very self-assertive. Of course, they talk a lot. However, they don’t always talk. The way American businesspeople communicate is by talking a lot, listening actively and giving lots of praise. They make an extra effort to praise others as much as they can.

When Mr. Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, was in his early thirties, there was a technical meeting with him in Tokyo. It was a meeting in which the Japanese engineers of the company I was working at participated. During the meeting, Mr. Gates kept saying, “It's a great idea! Super!” over and over. In any case, he kept praising the engineers and our ideas by saying “Super!”. Nobody felt uncomfortable by the praise heaped on us by Mr. Gates.

However, he began to give us orders by saying “Maybe we can improve it further by doing this…” Although excellent executives are sometimes self-assertive, they also listen actively and praise others in a clever manner.

●Switching between one’s real intentions and public face is commonplace throughout the world
It was thought that switching between one’s real intentions and their public face is a Japanese person’s specialty. But this is not true. Even American businesspeople switch between the two on occasion. Company executives often invite their subordinates or associates to a Christmas party at their home. The main aim of this kind of party is to promote mutual communication among work colleagues.

When the host is chatting with a guest, even if the guest’s opinion is different from that of the host, the host will never say “I don’t think so!!” in such a social occasion. Usually the host listens patiently to the guest while he talks and he doesn’t give his true feelings away. It is the common rule that the subordinate doesn’t say his real intentions when interacting with his boss in social occasions, even under the influence of alcohol.

We Japanese don’t say our honest opinions to our boss in a free and easy party environment. Likewise American businesspeople with good common sense switch between their real intentions and their public face where appropriate.

Super!」

I don't think so !!"

Goal setting is the key to success in learning a foreign language. ~Frivolous goals help you improve your language skills!?~

Goal setting is the key to success in learning a foreign language.
~Frivolous goals help you improve your language skills!?~

●Typewriters of the now-defunct Italian company, Olivetti...
Everyone thinks that it would be great if we could speak a foreign language when shopping, asking street directions or when dining out while abroad. But even if we think so, it is not that easy to master a foreign language. Many travelers have a hard time in the countryside of Italy/France, and in Eastern Europe, because communication in English is difficult there.

It was 25 years ago. I had an opportunity to go on a business trip to Italy. It was my first trip to Italy. The IT-related meeting was held at a hotel near Lake Como in the north of Italy. Several companies, such as DEC, Apollo, MIPS,Philips, Olivetti and Sony gathered there. Olivetti had organized the meeting as a company from the host country.

Speaking of Olivetti, it was a very reputable manufacturer of typewriter products. Their product designs were superb and the company’s cultural activities had been very active. At that time, companies like Olivetti and Fiat were considered blue-chip companies in Italy.

As an aside, the other day I asked a young man in his early twenties whether he knows of Olivetti’s typewriters. He said that he did not know. He said that he had never seen a real typewriter, though he had seen them in movies and in magazines. Much less that he had never heard the name Olivetti. Their typewriters are now a forgotten legacy of the past, like Telex products.

●Communication difficulties in English in restaurants in northern Italy
The meeting took place over three days. Although the meeting was conducted in English, I somehow managed to struggle my way through. However once I got out of the hotel, I found that I could not communicate in English. I couldn't read the menu or order a meal when I went out to eat by myself.

When I ate out at a restaurant, there happened to be an English speaking person in the kitchen. He taught me about Italian dining. He said, "You should not order a caffe latte at dinner. caffe latte is only a morning drink.

In Italy, espressos are always served from the afternoon. The only people who order caffe latte at dinner time are Americans or tourists." When eating my dinner, butter was not served with the bread. I asked "Can I have butter?”. To which he replied, “Butter should not be served with bread. Butter should be used in the kitchen. Bread should be dipped in olive oil.” I was shocked when a pizza with a very thin crust came out as I was used to pizzas with thick crusts. He said, "A pizza with a thick crust is American pizza. It is not Italian pizza. We don’t call that pizza"

Now Italian dining is popular all over Japan. We are not put off by thin pizza or olive oil. However, everything was a learning experience for me at that time. After having such an experience, I really thought that I would like to learn the Italian language before my next trip to Italy so that I could order a meal in Italian.

●Frivolous goals help people increase their motivation to achieve them...
On New Year’s Day 4 years ago, I made a plan for a trip to Italy in autumn. My destination was Parma. Parma is a town located an hour and a half south of Milan by train. The town of Parma is famous for its food culture with Parma ham and Parmesan cheese ,two well-known products of the region. They say there are many gourmet restaurants. Hidetoshi Nakata is a Japanese soccer player who used to play for Parma F.C., the local soccer team.

I made a resolution to have private Italian lessons, in order to visit Parma in the autumn. Mr. U, a tall, good-looking 28 year old young man, was assigned as my private Italian teacher. He told me that he came to Tokyo one month ago after studying Japanese art in Venice University.

When starting the lessons, I mentioned my goal of learning the Italian language to him. “I am going to Parma for 10 days this autumn. I would like to eat gourmet meals. I would like to enjoy small talk at the restaurant and order food and drink in Italian."

Mr. U confidently replied, “Alright. Leave it to me..." Then he suggested an additional goal to me. That was, “Trying to strike up a conversation with the ladies in the street is considered good manners in Italy. Let's see if you can reach a level where you are able to strike up a conversation with the ladies.” I saw no reason to oppose his suggestion. It would be great to see my Italian rise to such a level.

With this, the lessons with Mr. U started. Lessons lasted 90 minutes starting at 10 am on every Saturday morning. The lesson continued up until just before I left for Parma. If a student has a specific goal, the goal will push him further to improve. And the teacher can find supporting the student to be very rewarding. He also taught me Italian not appearing in the text book.

●Goal achievement levels need to be evaluated
So how was my Italian after taking private lessons for 8 months? I arrived in Milan after transferring from my flight from Japan. From Milan city, I rode the train to Parma. I entered a small cozy Italian restaurant in the town. I ordered a salad, a pizza and a beer, as it was lunch time. Of course, I ordered my meal in Italian. I also managed to hold a small conversation with the people at the restaurant, saying such things as "it’s a fine day today, isn’t it...!"

I boastingly looked over my wife’s face who was sitting to my side as if to say, “I did it! My Italian is the result of 8 months of private lessons. It’s pretty good isn’t it?" My wife opened her mouth and told me, “This pizza costs too much..."

Anyhow, I could achieve one of my goals in the restaurant. It was then that I was awaiting my chance to try and attain my other goal, which was, "To try to strike up a conversation with the ladies in the street." However my wife was constantly sticking to me for fear of getting lost and I lost the opportunity to try my new abilities out. If I had said "Why don't you go shopping for brand goods?” she might gone out by herself. It was a matter of great regret, but as they say, hindsight is 20/20. However even if I could have achieved my other goal, my practical Italian lessons may have ended up being very expensive by way of having a massive credit card bill from my wife’s shopping come later on.

In any event, it is important to have a goal when learning a foreign language.

"Tell me your story"

●Story embedded in a pair of tennis shoes:
If you are a tennis fan, you probably know the name Monica Seles.
A US woman tennis player, she won the French Open at the youngest ever age of 16.

In 1993, she was stabbed by an attacker during a tennis match.
She was seriously injured in the back.
It took more than 2 years for her to be able to play on the court again.

At that time, I was in charge of marketing at Nike Japan.
Nike decided to introduce a pair of tennis shoes featuring Monica Seles.

The shoes contained our wishes for her quick recovery and return to the tennis court.
In marketing this product, we decided to appeal the story behind the shoes, rather than emphasize the shoes’ performance.

The story behind of the model featuring Monica hit a cord with tennis fans.
By virtue of this story, these tennis shoes turned out to be a great hit.
Weaving a story into a product is called "Story Marketing".
It is a marketing technique which attaches added emotional value through a ‘story’ on top of the value of the product as an object.

●Storytelling generates sympathy and emotion :
This form of storytelling is applied not only to ‘objects’ but also to people.
In October, I had an opportunity to attend the conference which was held by the "International Coach Federation".
I met with a HR manager of a US corporation.
She mentioned that she asks applicants "Tell me your story!” when interviewing them.

Talking about oneself is a form of ‘storytelling’.
When storytelling people talk about a turning point or an actual experience in their own lives.
"Storytelling" also involves talking for 2-3 minutes about such things as prior struggles, times where you turned things around from disappointment, hard-earned achievements and what you learned from them etc.
According to this HR manager, storytelling is a very useful way to learn other people's views on life and sense of value.

Here is one example of storytelling:

“I was working at a measuring equipment manufacturer as a sales representative. My sales performance had not been favorable. My sales results were the 5th lowest among 12 sales people.
One Friday I was tasked with trying to find the cause of a malfunction of one of our products with workers of a customer’s factory by working holidays, overtime and all through the night, with the permission of my boss.
On Tuesday, 4 days later, the cause of trouble was proven to be the poor quality of the parts, and they were immediately exchanged.
This had caused a lot of trouble for Company A, but due to this trouble, I could forge a stronger relationship with Company A, one of our clients.
My sincere attitude seemed to be well appraised.
From this I gained confidence in myself.
I found myself visiting customers more often, and as a result of this, I had a newfound interest in sales.
My sales results improved and I received commendations for my work.”

Like this, a story further engages the reader/listener by including specifics regarding the matter actually experienced or how change occurred.
In order to formulate this kind of story, it is important for people to look at oneself objectively and make a conscious effort to improve one’s abilities.
People who do not have an awareness of the issues surrounding them do not make good storytellers.

There was an article on ‘storytelling’ in a recent issue of the US magazine “Forbes”.
“How storytelling spurs success”
The article told of the importance of storytelling in advancing one’s career.
It also included tips on how stories should be constructed.

Good stories often induce laughter, tears, sympathy and other emotions.
The data and information on a PowerPoint slide cannot catch the hearts and minds of your audience.
Storytelling is like creating your own personal episode of the NHK TV program “Project X”.

I told my wife about storytelling.
My wife says: “I can tell why your storytelling has the ability to fully move others.” “I have a lot of source material from which I can tell your stories because I have seen your failure, disappointment and discouragement many times over.”
“It’d surely deeply move people and give them confidence.”

I’ll have to find a way to put a zipper on my wife’s mouth.
It’s a good thing that there is no family interview when applying for a job, unlike an interview at a private elementary school.
