Tell me your story

"Tell me your story"

●Story embedded in a pair of tennis shoes:
If you are a tennis fan, you probably know the name Monica Seles.
A US woman tennis player, she won the French Open at the youngest ever age of 16.

In 1993, she was stabbed by an attacker during a tennis match.
She was seriously injured in the back.
It took more than 2 years for her to be able to play on the court again.

At that time, I was in charge of marketing at Nike Japan.
Nike decided to introduce a pair of tennis shoes featuring Monica Seles.

The shoes contained our wishes for her quick recovery and return to the tennis court.
In marketing this product, we decided to appeal the story behind the shoes, rather than emphasize the shoes’ performance.

The story behind of the model featuring Monica hit a cord with tennis fans.
By virtue of this story, these tennis shoes turned out to be a great hit.
Weaving a story into a product is called "Story Marketing".
It is a marketing technique which attaches added emotional value through a ‘story’ on top of the value of the product as an object.

●Storytelling generates sympathy and emotion :
This form of storytelling is applied not only to ‘objects’ but also to people.
In October, I had an opportunity to attend the conference which was held by the "International Coach Federation".
I met with a HR manager of a US corporation.
She mentioned that she asks applicants "Tell me your story!” when interviewing them.

Talking about oneself is a form of ‘storytelling’.
When storytelling people talk about a turning point or an actual experience in their own lives.
"Storytelling" also involves talking for 2-3 minutes about such things as prior struggles, times where you turned things around from disappointment, hard-earned achievements and what you learned from them etc.
According to this HR manager, storytelling is a very useful way to learn other people's views on life and sense of value.

Here is one example of storytelling:

“I was working at a measuring equipment manufacturer as a sales representative. My sales performance had not been favorable. My sales results were the 5th lowest among 12 sales people.
One Friday I was tasked with trying to find the cause of a malfunction of one of our products with workers of a customer’s factory by working holidays, overtime and all through the night, with the permission of my boss.
On Tuesday, 4 days later, the cause of trouble was proven to be the poor quality of the parts, and they were immediately exchanged.
This had caused a lot of trouble for Company A, but due to this trouble, I could forge a stronger relationship with Company A, one of our clients.
My sincere attitude seemed to be well appraised.
From this I gained confidence in myself.
I found myself visiting customers more often, and as a result of this, I had a newfound interest in sales.
My sales results improved and I received commendations for my work.”

Like this, a story further engages the reader/listener by including specifics regarding the matter actually experienced or how change occurred.
In order to formulate this kind of story, it is important for people to look at oneself objectively and make a conscious effort to improve one’s abilities.
People who do not have an awareness of the issues surrounding them do not make good storytellers.

There was an article on ‘storytelling’ in a recent issue of the US magazine “Forbes”.
“How storytelling spurs success”
The article told of the importance of storytelling in advancing one’s career.
It also included tips on how stories should be constructed.

Good stories often induce laughter, tears, sympathy and other emotions.
The data and information on a PowerPoint slide cannot catch the hearts and minds of your audience.
Storytelling is like creating your own personal episode of the NHK TV program “Project X”.

I told my wife about storytelling.
My wife says: “I can tell why your storytelling has the ability to fully move others.” “I have a lot of source material from which I can tell your stories because I have seen your failure, disappointment and discouragement many times over.”
“It’d surely deeply move people and give them confidence.”

I’ll have to find a way to put a zipper on my wife’s mouth.
It’s a good thing that there is no family interview when applying for a job, unlike an interview at a private elementary school.

Miss Universe and Global Human Resources

Following essay was posted to monthly magazine "Staff Adviser " home page.

Miss Universe and Global Human Resources

●Dinner with Miss Universe Korea.
It was three years ago, while I was working as a managing director of a satellite broadcasting company of Korean TV drama programs.
By chance, I had an opportunity to have a dinner with the Korean representative to the Miss Universe pageant at an Italian Restaurant in Azabu.
Just being able to meet the person elected as Miss Universe Korea brought me great excitement, but to have dinner with her - that’s not the sort of thing that happens everyday.
I went out giddy with excitement.
I guess you could call it one of the perks of the job.
As you'd probably expect, Miss Universe Korea was tall, had a small face, and had big bright eyes.
She talked to me about what she was doing and her career during the meal.
According to her, she graduated high school in Korea, and went to Canada to study English.
She was elected as the Korean representative for the Miss Universe pageant while studying abroad.
When I met with her, she was taking training lessons in Japan in preparation for the Miss Universe pageant held in July.
She explained that she was living with Miss Universe Japan in an apartment in Aoyama, and that both of them were taking lessons together from Ms. Ines Ligron, a French woman.

● Miss Universe Japan crowned Miss Universe
I first heard of Ms. Ines Ligron by seeing her on a TV program by chance.
Japanese representatives had tended to have little success at the contest in the past.
However, Ms. Ines Ligron has achieved unprecedented results since starting to train Miss Universe Japan representatives, guiding five Japanese representatives into the top 15 from the implementation of her training until 2008, including Ms. Kurara Chibana, first runner-up in 2006 and Ms. Riyo Mori, winner in 2007.
To tell the truth, Ms. Kurara Chibana and Ms. Riyo Mori’s success at the Miss Universe pageant surprised a lot of Japanese people.
There were people who questioned “Really? She won the Miss Universe Pageant?"
I was one of them.
The criteria for Miss Universe in Japan used to be ‘popular’ or ‘adorable,’ as decided by Japanese men and the press.
Representatives were chosen based on the average Japanese viewpoint of attractiveness.
However, a Japanese representative elected by such criteria has not seen success at the main Miss Universe pageant.

●What is the international standard of the Miss Universe pageant?
One of the judging criteria for the Miss Universe pageant is to be global.
To be considered globally active, a woman should be mature, intellectual and show their personality.
Miss Universe is chosen by judges of the main Miss Universe pageant.
The audience does not choose.
Therefore, the possibility of receiving a prize rises if Japan can put up a representative to whom the judges will score well.
To speak in extremes, all we have to do is to select a Japanese representative that appeals to the judges’ preferences.
Ms. Ines Ligron knew this well.
The key is not to model Japanese representatives based on the Japanese standard of beauty, but to rather to mold them based on the judges’ standards.
That is, to create a woman in line with global standards of chawrm and beauty.

●Global human resources in demand
The domestic Japanese market is shrinking due to an aging population, low birthrate and the relative fall of Japan’s economic power.
Japanese companies are eagerly advancing into overseas markets targeting developing nations.
Securing global human resources in order to promote this foray has become a matter of urgency.
‘Global human resources’ refer to employees with not only English communication abilities, but also employees with the capability to understand and be receptive to the culture and values of developing countries and their people.
In other words, it is vital to learn of the needs and wants of the local people by listening to them.
When I told my wife about this she agreed with me for a change.
She says “We should foster global human resources in our home. In order to do that, cross-cultural experience is necessary. You should take me abroad.”
But that's another matter entirely.

English http://www.staffad.com/business/shinbori04_02.html

The globalizing face of sushi restaurants and a company's official language

■Hospitality in English by a proprietress from the Philippines

I sometimes eat out at a sushi restaurant in Waseda. This sushi restaurant has a very international atmosphere and is always full of visitors who come from various countries. The secret to its popularity is, of course, the fresh and delicious sushi they offer. But another secret is the proprietress of the restaurant, who is a former citizen of the Philippines.

The proprietress makes friends with everyone with her naturally cheerful character and frankness. It is strange to see visitors become friends with one another by the time they finish their meals, even though it is their first meeting at the sushi restaurant. The proprietress came from the Philippines. Not to mention her native language of Tagalog, she also speaks Japanese, Spanish and English very fluently. They say that recently overseas visitors who have gotten to know her through Facebook have gone out of their way to see her.

■Young sushi chef in Tsukiji explains about sushi in English

There is another sushi restaurant in Tsukiji. Many foreign visitors also visit this sushi restaurant.I went there the other day and sat at the counter.Sitting next to me was a family of three; a primary school boy and his parents. They told me that they came to Tokyo from Germany to visit Disneyland and enjoy sushi in Tsukiji. It seems that this Sushi restaurant had been introduced on the Internet.

I was surprised that they came all the way from overseas to eat sushi at such a restaurant (although it must be rude to say so!)Then I immediately found the reason for their coming.Among the four chefs preparing the sushi by hand at the sushi bar, one was a young chef still in his late twenties. This young chef was explaining various aspects of sushi in English.

This is mackerel, this is medium fatty tuna, this is salmon roe and this is fresh water eel etc.About ‘eel’, which is not a popular dish abroad, he commented that the Japanese split and broil the eel before eating it. His comment was also very useful for me, giving me a good reference as to how to explain such things in English.

■The globalization of the customer

Recently I often see and hear words such as the ‘globalization of the company’. When I hear the word globalization, I imagine a big company's expansion into overseas markets. However, the sushi restaurants in Waseda and Tsukiji are acting globally even though they are located in Japan.Their geographical market is Japan, but the nature of their business is attracting customers from overseas to Japan.

One important factor of globalization is language. If there is a proprietress or a head chef who can speak fluent English in a sushi restaurant, visitors from overseas can feel at ease when entering the sushi restaurant.

If a sushi restaurant were to have a sushi chef with an international sense and the ability to communicate in English to overseas guests over the counter while preparing sushi, such a sushi restaurant will find its business expand naturally.

■Employees get a shock! "Our company's official language is English!"

As a part of corporate globalization, some Japanese companies have decided to make English their official language. Uniqlo and Rakuten are two such companies. One CEO declaring that the company’s official language should be English, because the company’s business volume in overseas markets is increasing. The goal for employees looking to attain a management position is a TOEIC score of 700.

However, some people have criticized "Why do Japanese employees of a Japanese company in Japan have to speak in English amongst themselves? It is ridiculous!!"

It is clear that Japan’s birthrate, population and its GDP continue to decrease year after year.Japan’s domestic market is also shrinking.

I guess it was a form of shock treatment for the employees that the CEO came out and bluntly declared English as the company's official language.

"To our employees, our company will aim to expand its business in overseas markets from now on. To achieve this it will be necessary to communicate in English. So please study English very hard..." Rather than this long message, "Our company’s official language is English!!" is more direct and self-explanatory. With this more direct message, employees will definitely begin to study English in earnest.

I sometimes invite foreign guests to my home to have a meal with my family. My wife, who speaks poor English, tries to join in the conversation. Upon hearing my wife’s English, I hit on a splendid plan. We should make English the official language in our home! Then the scolding I get from my wife will decrease and meddling will be avoided. What a wonderful idea!

However... just thinking about what would happen if she were to mutate and become an English master keeps me from carrying out this plan.

The Presentation of U.S. Business Style

■ US Business person who are demanded for the presentation capability
U.S. society is called the presentation country.
I am sometimes surprised that presentation capability is regarded significantly important in the U.S. society when I work with the U.S. or foreign companies.
In the large U.S. companies, many business persons from ordinary level to executive level are very good at the presentation.

In the U.S., the presentation capability is looked upon the total human power which includes his/her internal sprit.
It is the very surprising for me, from the view of sense which Japanese has.
If we can confess our real intention, we could not tell his/her work skill level neither work style easily by watching only 10 or 20 minutes presentation.
The weight and positioning about the presentation is quite different between U.S. and Japan.

■ The point in common among the master of the presentation
Speaking of the presentation, the name I can recall immediately is Mr. Steve Jobs of Apple and Mr. Bill Gates of Microsoft.
Both of them are called to be the master of the presentation.
They are highly evaluated in the world.

The first time when I came across their presentation was the National Computer Conference in the Disney Land Hotel, California in 1983.
Since then, I had the opportunities to have watched their presentation several times, because I have been involved in IT business world.

There is common thing in their presentation. They never read the speech typescript at the speech table.
They walk slowly on wide stage, and stop/pause sometimes at the spot on the stage.
The attitude of the speech is with staging, gesture and body language.
Although I could not understand the whole their speech in English, their passion and heart was transmitted.Corporate culture is also transmitted through the presentation.

■ Invisible effort behind the presentation
Most of IT Company’s executive in the U.S. are good at the presentation.
I thought "They can make a presentation without any hardship because they have inborn ability.
"But I learned that this thought was incorrect.

It was 10 years ago.
The CEO of IT U.S. company was invited to the keynote speaker for IT related big conference. He arrived directly at Makuhari, the conference venue, from Narita Airport.
As soon as he got the conference place, he mentioned " I would like to make a preparation for tomorrow’s presentation".
I thought it would be a short meeting or simple rehearsal for the presentation.
However it was incorrect. He started the dry run (a full unimplemented rehearsal).
His presentation on next day is scheduled to be one hour.
He adjusted his speech so that it would be finished exactly within the specified time, by considering even the joke where it would be fitted.
The time when he left the convention center was over 10 pm in the night.

On the following day, he could manage perfectly his presentation in the keynote speech session.
It was fabulous presentation which attracted audiences, without any glance on the speech manuscript.
I have learned that there is invisible shadowed effort and preparation in the back of the good presentation.
Recently, to use PowerPoint is very popular at the presentation.
PowerPoint is very effective tool, because it can make appeal to people's eyesight.
But it might be danger to rely on it much.
The pillar of the presentation is the speech. The PowerPoint is the supplement for the speech. The message which has to be transmitted may be obscured by the telling too much on the contents of the PowerPoint

■ Should not use PowerPoint at the presentation
I worked Nike Inc, before.I was in charge of marketing department.
The sales meeting was held twice a year in Nike Inc.
All marketing / sales staff in Asia district get together in one place and product line up for next season is announced.

The sales meeting on that year was in the beginning of December at Sheraton Hotel in Hawaii Island, by renting it’s while facilities.
Just before the sales meeting, Honolulu marathon sponsored by Nike was opened.
I participated at Honolulu marathon. After the finish of the course, I exchanged my close at the goal and headed for the Hotel in Hawaii Island by caching the plane at Honolulu.

I was supposed to make a presentation about the marketing plan and product lineup for Japan market.
The presentation and rehearsal of the meeting was started from the evening on that day when I arrived at the Hotel in Hawaii Island.

There was a rule in the presentation at this sales meeting.
The power point is never allowed to be used. However, the real physical product such as shoes and wear are allowed to be brought and shown to the audiences.
That was the rule.
The presentation time assigned to me was 30 minutes.

Before leaving for Hawaii, I prepared the script for my speech, and I learned it by heart.
In the previous day of sales meeting, I made a dry run several time at the place of the meeting.

By repeating several time, the content in the script became my own contents in my heart by itself. I could make speech in my own words.
Then, the presentation time came on the next day.

The arrangement was made meticulously; accordingly I can calm myself down.Once self possessed, I could see the audience face and their reaction.

It consumes a lot of time for the preparation by conducting the presentation without any PowerPoint, and making a speech without watching the script.
Speaking without seeing the script causes the big pressure for the speaker.
However it bought me the fruitful experience, when I remember it.I could gain my confident such as "I can do it, if I do it".

If you have a chance, I recommend to make a practice for the presentation "without showing PowerPoint and seeing manuscript" If you can make a presentation which can attract the ear and heart of the audiences, your personal and business valuation will be highly appraised.
Nobody can achieve billionaire like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.
Bust anybody can become the master of the presentation.

Apple, IBM, Sony
